Weekend Activity Descriptions
This will be a two day workshop held in the Superior Ballroom at
Lutsen Resort. Individuals are required to provide all their
own materials.
Many classes teach you how to paint. Mary Jo will coach you on
becoming an artist. In these workshops Mary Jo will work
one-on-one with each participant, recognizing and encouraging
individual strengths, styles and techniques. Mary Jo will
guide you in composition, lighting, drawing and mixing colors.
Because the workshop is tailored to instruct each student
individually, there is not a sense of competitiveness and the
atmosphere is positive and relaxed. The camaraderie and mutual
support between fellow students is an added bonus, new friendships
and connections are often forged.
Mary Jo welcomes you to bring a blank canvas with photographs of
something you'd like to paint or if you have a painting in progress
and would like help with it, you can bring that.
Weather permitting, Mary Jo will guide a hike on one of the many
trails after class on Saturday in pursuit of inspiration for future
pieces. Hike is optional although she invites you to join her!
Required Materials
- Oils, water-soluble oils and acrylics are welcome in class
- I recommend the following colors:
Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Burnt Umber, Raw Sienna, Alizarian Crimson, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Titanium White or white of your choice, and any other colors that look appealing to you. (these colors are suggestions, if you have other blues, reds and browns, you do not need to purchase these specific colors). - Turpenoid for oil painters, (odorless turpentine substitute) I prefer the one in the blue and white can.
- Pre-stretched canvas or canvas board
- Wood, plastic, glass or paper palette to mix paints on. Freezer paper works great!
- A variety of brushes
- Rags or paper towels
- Jars for water or turpentine
- Photos of what you would like to paint if you're are starting a new piece
- A free standing or table top easel
